The most common reason why we want to get a massage is because we all crave for something that will soothe and give us relief from some specific type of discomfort. This type of therapy has been around for thousands of years and in all that history, various different forms have emerged along the way, some of them new while some are centuries old.
The most traditional and basic way of how a massage works is that it applies both pressure and movement to very specific parts of the body, including that of muscles, skin, tendons, and ligaments. Even though there are probably a hundred different massage therapies in the world, only a select few carry the distinction of being popularly recognized across the globe. So this article is basically about those most popular and common types of massage you probably already have heard.
1 – Swedish massage
This right here deserves to be mentioned first. This massage type is widely used in many countries all around the world because of its inherent effectiveness in improving the blood flow to the skin and muscles. And by doing so, it effectively removes muscle tension.
2 – Sports massage
As the term suggests, this kind of massage is intended for athletes and people who are physically active. It is very distinctive compared to the rest because it is physically stronger and more vigorous. The original purpose of this body massage is to provide warm up to the muscle tissues, which athletes need; but overtime, it has become quite a valuable help in training as well as the prevention and/or treatment of an injury.
3 – Reflexology
Reflexology is actually one of the newer types of massage around. It is based on the logic that every organ in the body is mapped to the feet and hands. The idea behind it is that through the application of finger pressure and stretching on the pressure points located on the foot, the organs of the body are aided for them to function normally.
4 – Shiatsu
There’s a recent hype surrounding this Japanese-created massage due to its similarity to acupuncture, which in turn was invented by the Chinese. According to shiatsu, the body is made up of interlinked webs of energy pathways in which if there is a blockage in those webs, there will be imbalances in the flow of energy. Because of this imbalance in energy blow, the body will feel pain, tension, as well as overall weakness. An expert shiatsu practitioner will then use the combination of stretching and pressure, targeting the body’s key points in order to relieve the person of the pain, tension, and weakness through the restoration of the body’s natural energy flow.
